Guidelines for Using a Prayer Room
It is important to realize that a functioning prayer room needs some guidelines and explanation in order for it to be used properly. We have seen all kinds of people come into our prayer room and some have no idea how they work!
Below is a sample copy of the guidelines that others are using. They are not the last word and are here merely to give you a basic frame work for your own rooms.
Why is this room different?
There is freedom in this room to be yourself, to express yourself using all forms of creativity known to man. Prayer is about pressing into God, standing in the gap for those who cannot stand for themselves or just worshipping Him for beauty’s sake. The Lord desires our worship, our focus and our lives. This is the place for you to work those things out in your own life, in whatever way you feel comfortable to do so.
This is not just a nice room to pray but a Holy place so please respect it in that way. We would advise you also to take off your shoes. This is not compulsory rule…. just a good discipline! There is also a desk with books available for your personal use. They are to aid your prayer so please don’t use this room as a study room…….there are other places for that. Feel free to use the couch, sprawl out on the floor, use the cushions or just pace up and down! This is your time with the Lord so be yourself.
Remember also to book out times to pray on the sign up sheet in the hall, this room can be used for individual prayer or for corporate use.
Why are the walls covered in paper?
This is for you to record what God is saying, to write out encouraging and challenging scripture. To write Godly poetry, cool quotes and to create Holy Spirit inspired art work (there are paints and pens available). There is no limit to our expressions for the Lords sake, so feel free to find space and add your contribution. We find that these things inspire us when we are praying, they help to bring focus to prayer for we are a generation finding it hard to maintain focus…….when you feel yourself slipping – READ THE WALLS!
Why the altar?
This is a New Testament altar based on the scripture in Romans 12:1-2. ‘ Therefore I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.’
It is a place at the foot of the cross for you to lay down parts of your life that need to go or need to be submitted to Jesus. This can be painful, but obedience is a long term investment that will lead to life in its fullness
Why the cross?
This is a Celtic cross because it represents our Christian heritage as a nation. The different symbols represent different aspects of our faith while the knot work represents our journey into God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. The cross is the centre of our lives, reminding us of what Jesus has done for us. Because of His sacrifice, death and resurrection we have freedom to enter into the presence of the Lord God Almighty, pure, without sin. Grace.
Everything we do is because of Jesus. It is all about Him. Romans 8:1-6, 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Why the stereo?
Use this as a worshipping instrument. There are quite a few CD’s and tapes available for you to use here. This too brings focus to our prayer and helps us to worship the Lord because we love him. There are a number of ‘drum and bass’ pieces in the collection that we find helpful during intercession and spiritual warfare times. Please feel free to donate to the collection any music that you feel would benefit us all.
Why the cushions?
To kneel before the Lord. Should we not be a people that prays on our knees?
It also helps you to remember who you are.
