Prayer Room Essentials

Prayer rooms should be inviting. When these rooms go from bare walls to inviting and thought-provoking areas, prayer times become easier and more effective. There are numerous things you can do in a prayer room; we’ve included just a few below to spark your own ideas.

Have prayer guides

Many people want to pray but they struggle with knowing what to say. Placing prayer guides around the room will help them pray more effective prayers for various subjects. These guides should have prayer points as well as associated scriptures to pray for the topic. We have several prayer guides that can be obtained and easily put in your prayer room or Bible.

Post requests and thoughts in your room / on your walls.

As God speaks to you, or you receive an encouraging or challenging scripture, write it down. If appropriate to post, write down the things that God is burdening you to pray about. You may wish to post notes with your thoughts on prayer or answers to prayer that God gives. Have pens and paper (post-Its) available. Often these things inspire us when we are praying, and they can help bring focus to prayer when our minds start wandering.

Use an altar

Romans 12:1-2. “Therefore I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Have an altar and/or cross in your prayer room to use and symbolize as a place of repentance, cleansing, and submission. You may wish to post things on the cross that you are struggling with, or post the names of those you are praying for that need salvation or healing.

Use maps and photos of Kingdom needs

Our prayer times must include prayers for the Kingdom of God – missions, nations, people groups, etc. Using photos, maps, or objects representing needs of the world will help people remember to pray, as well as what to pray for. Posting photos of missionaries in a foreign nation along with things that they need prayer for will make your prayer time much more effective.

Use a stereo or CD/iPod player

Using music during prayer help bring focus to our prayer and worship. Include music that won’t be distracting. You may wish to have worship music that is from a nation you are praying for.

Have cushions or comfortable seating

People should be comfortable, and yet, there are times we need to pray in a submissive way. Having cushions helps when kneeling, while comfortable seating aids during our extended periods in prayer.
